The Thursday Post 11.4.13

Valmiki is the poet who wrote Ramayana- the story of Shriramchandra- one of the most pious books of Hinduism. His story, just like Kalidasa is really inspiring! He used to be known as Ratnakara and was a ruthless robber. One day while he was waiting for a victim sage Narada came by, on accosted by Ratnakara he asked why he sins! Ratnakara replied that he sins to feed his family, the sage asked will his family share his sins when the judgment day will come, Ratnakara answered yes, the sage told him to go and ask his family members- he went and asked and they all said that he is doing his duty of feeding and sheltering them, if he takes sinful means to do that he will have to suffer the consequences not them. This conversation changed him from the root and he started to meditate to seek divine forgiveness.

It’s said he became so still and motionless that termites formed nest (valmik) all over him and covered him- thus he got the name Valmiki! When he woke up from his meditation he realized he has been blessed by wealth of knowledge and expertise on Sanskrit- he was born in the same era of Shriramchandra- when Shriramchandra deserted pregnant sita in forest he rescued her and brought her sons up for a while, before Ram took them to his palace and sita was taken away by Goddess Earth when she was asked to prove his chastity again by Ram. Valmiki wrote the life of Ramchandra and gave it name of Ramayana! He taught the story to Ram’s sons Lava and Kusha. It’s said that by hearing that song Ram recognized them as his sons.
