20th March is world sparrow day. We have made common sparrows uncommon! Wow!
Back in my Burdwan home they were perfect nightmares, sparrows. We used to plant saplings in the morning and they used to come down for their dust bath, rolly polly all over the seedbeds and in the evening barely one or two were alive- not the sparrows the seedlings.
Here in Kolkata when I wake up and hear their call in the morning I feel happy to know they are still around.
Those interested to keep them around can put bird boxes, bird feeders and water outside their houses, but please beware, don’t make them cat food. I used these things in Burdwan because cats were not allowed in that house courtesy dogs, those were regular members of that household.
